Events – fall regional went OK with no major problems or unpaid bills

Publicity – Thornley moved, Lurth seconded to spend $20 on printing a cover letter and postage to mail a newsletter and membership form to leading sportswriters in an intense effort to get them to join.  This motion passed.

Thornley then requested a list of notable figures who should receive this mailing – brainstorm and be creative.

Clendennen announced he would sponsor printing of one newsletter

1988 SABR National Convention
The weekends of July 22-24 and July 29-31 have been identified as the first choices.

Volunteer lists have been divided among the convention co-chairs and tasks assigned.

Middlebrook Hall dormitory at the University of Minnesota has been identified as the first choice to hose.

Moore suggested a meeting with the 1987 convention committee for advice.

Thornley suggested a major publicity campaign in fall 1987 – media releases, Boone & Erickson (WCCO-AM), 1987 convention.

Moore commented 1988 might be the last national to be locally run.

Holst suggested we should ask the Twin Cities Reader for a supply of Twin Cities cultural activity propaganda.  Moore suggested we rely on Norm McGrew for this.  He has the ability to draw well-known speakers for low rates (possibly Bob Allison).

Old Business
None

New Business
Thornley moved and Holst seconded to hold the 1987 spring regional on Saturday, May 2.  This motion passed despite Clendennen’s sour grapes abstraction.  Thornley mentioned the opponent that night (New York Yankees) would provide excellent speaking opportunities (in Yankee media) and a truly emotional experience.

Presentations at regionals were discussed for future policy – be firm in enforcing time limits; make sure there is time for discussion of each presentation; no presentations after lunch; schedule 6 presenters for 30 minutes each; if more than 6 presenters volunteer, hold others (with first priority) to next regional; schedule a 10-minute intermission.

Clendennen suggested publishing a book featuring several answering the topic, “My First (or Favorite) Game Memories.”

Holst suggested developing a monthly half-hour show for St. Paul Community Access cable on SABR topics.

The next meeting was set for February 1, 1987, at 9:00 a.m. at the Ken Ottoson home, 4300 West River Parkway, Minneapolis.

Meeting adjourned 10:42 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Andy Lurth, Secretary-Treasurer
