Doug Grow to Speak at Spring Meeting May 22

Former Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist Doug Grow, who covered the Twins from 1979 to 1987, will be the featured guest at the Halsey Hall Chapter spring meeting Saturday, May 22. Doug, who now writes for MinnPost.com, recently had his book, We’re Gonna Win, Twins!, published.

The meeting will be at the Grace University Lutheran Church, 324 Harvard Street SE, Minneapolis, 612-331-0125. Parking is in lot AA, across Harvard Street from the church. The group will attend the Twins-Brewers game in the afternoon.

Members are invited to submit a proposal to make a research presentation at the meeting. Proposals must be made in writing (e-mail is fine) to Research Committee Chair Rich Arpi, 2445 Londin Lane East, Unit 410, Maplewood, Minnesota 55119-5547, rwaces@cs.com, and should include a title and brief outline of what the presentation will consist of with emphasis on the research that will be included. Standard presentations are 20 minutes (with an additional eight minutes for questions) although the duration may be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the presenter and of the schedule. The Research Committee (which also consists of Tom Swift, Dan Levitt, Cary Smith, Bob Tholkes, and Stew Thornley) will finalize the schedule of research presentations by May 8, two weeks before the meeting, so proposals must be submitted by then.

Two research presentations have been scheduled:

  • Almost Perfect: Charles Bender’s No-hitter and the Invention of the Slider by Tom Swift
  • Suspended and Tie Games: A History of Rule Changes by Stew Thornley

Registration for the meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies, hosted by Howard Luloff, starting at 9:00. The research presentations will take place in the morning with Doug Grow appearing from 10:30 to noon. The business meeting will be held during lunch between noon and 1 p.m., and another research presentation may be held before the group leaves for Target Field for the Twins-Brewers game.

Target Field

Tickets for the game are $17 each. To attend the game, send a check payable to Halsey Hall SABR by April 30 to Howard Luloff, 2509 Princeton Court, St. Louis Park 55416.

Registration for the meeting is $8, which includes lunch. There is also a meeting-only price of $5. Those wanting lunch must RSVP to Howard Luloff at 952-922-5036, hfan77@webtv.net, by May 15.

During the business meeting, three members will be elected to the chapter’s board of directors. Anyone interested in running for a two-year term may contact Nominating Committee Chair Art Mugalian at 612-721-2825, amugalian@comcast.net. Candidates may want to mark their calendars for Sunday, June 6, when the chapter board of directors will meet and elect officers for the 2010-2011 year. The board meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. at the home of Kevin Hennessy in St. Paul. At this meeting, the incoming board members and holdover board members will elect, from among themselves, a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer to a one-year term that will begin July 1. (A description of the duties for these offices is at http://halseyhall.org/bylaws#procedures.) Other than the elections at this board meeting, only the outgoing and holdover board members will be allowed to vote on chapter business because the board term of the incoming members will not begin until July 1.

Other Upcoming Events:
The next Hot Stove Saturday Morning will be May 1 at Bakers Square in Richfield.

The Halsey Hall Chapter Book Club will meet next on Saturday, June 5 at 9:30 a.m. to discuss two books about Willie Mays: Willie’s Time: Baseball’s Golden Age by Charles Einstein and Willie Mays: The Life, The Legend by James S. Hirsch. The book club will meet at its usual spot, the café area of Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall in Roseville.
