New Member: David Wee
David Wee has been an English professor at St. Olaf College for 37 years and has taught a course on Baseball and American Values for the past five years. David saw his first major league game at Wrigley Field in Chicago in the late 1940s and was a Cubs fan until the team traded away Davids hero, Andy Pafko, in 1951. David has attended World Series games at the Metrodome in 1987 and 1991 and saw Dave Winfields 3,000th hit, but the best game he ever saw was a 1-0, 16-inning duel at Candlestick Park between Warren Spahn and Juan Marichal, a game won on a home run by Willie Mays.
A distance runner for more than 50 years, David was an All-American at St. Olaf and is in the schools Hall of Fame.
David and his wife, Karen Herseth, have three children: Rebecca, a poet and college professor; Jonathan, a professional juggler; and Allison, a graduate student.
David shares his January 20 birthday with Camilo Pascual, Dave Boswell, Ozzie Guillen, Jimmy Outlaw, and Buzz Aldrin. Directory information is below.
Holst Presides over Japanese Baseball Ceremony
Alan Holst was the officer in charge of a ceremony/press event at the American Embassy in Tokyo during which Japanese pitching legend Shigeru Sugishita, Tetsuharu Kawakami (known as the God of Batting), and Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame Chairman/Japan Professional Baseball Association Commissioner Hiromori Kawashima showed Ambassador Howard Baker the
official plaque of Lefty ODoul, who this year becomes the first American major leaguer to be inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.
Book Club
The first meeting of the fledgling chapter book club will be at the Dunn Coffee Shop in the Roseville Library (County Road B and Hamline Avenue) at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 10. The book to be read is Hitter by Ed Linn. For more information, contact Tom Swift at swifttom@hotmail.com.
SABR Convention
Halsey Hall Chapter members at the SABR convention in Boston were Bob Tholkes, Barry Bengtsson, Rich Cohen, Ray Luurs, Ted Hathaway, Brenda Himrich, Howard Luloff, Geoff Luurs, Rich Arpi, Dan Levitt, Cary Smith, Connie Hill, Stew Thornley, and Jim Wyman.
With more than 700 attendees, it was the largest SABR convention ever.
Paul Giel
Paul Giel, who died May 22, was a guest at our Spring Chapter Meeting in 1992. As a football player for the Minnesota Gophers, Giel was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy winner in 1953. However, he pursued a baseball career professionally, signing with the New York Giants. He later pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates (and, in the minors, for Phoenix, Columbus, and Salt Lake City) and was sold to the Minnesota Twins in February 1961. He was traded to Kansas City in June of 1961 and, after one outing, retired from the game. He then became the sports director for WCCO Radio and later the athletic director at Minnesota.
Dr. Fan Wins Hilda Award
Seth C. Dr. Fan Hawkins is the 2002 recipient of the Hilda Award from the Baseball Reliquary. Named in honor of Hilda Chester, the First Lady of Flatbush who rang her cow bell at Ebbets Field, the award was established to honor baseball fans and their importance to the game and its history. Dr. Fan was recognized for his achievements that include attending a major league baseball game at every stadium used for major league baseball in the last 50 years and every 3,000th hit since 1970. Information on the award is at http://www.baseballreliquary.org/hildaaward.htm.
Cow Chips
Chuck Blomquist attended the home opener of the Northern Leagues Les Capitales de Quebec at Le Stade in Quebec City. He also got to a Giants-Orioles game at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco and saw Barry Bonds hit a ball about 500 feet. Unfortunately, Chuck adds, it went straight up and not into the bay. . . . Dean Urdahl is running for the Minnesota House of Representatives. He is the endorsed Republican candidate in
District 18B (in Meeker and Wright counties).
