Left: Joe Garagiola was the keynote speaker at the banquet. Right: Moderator Larry Gerlach and former American League umpire Bill Haller. Haller made comments ranging from provocative to funny to candid to strange. He said he didnt think women should be umpires because of the abuse theyd have to take. Of Earl Weaver, he commented, When the bastard dies, theyll have to hire pallbearers. Regarding the second game of the 1982 World Series, when he worked the plate and called some close pitches balls that resulted in three walks to Cardinals hitters that forced in the go-ahead run and the flak that he took, he answered, I deserved it. It was one of the worst games I ever worked. While talking about beanballs, he observed, You should never read the paper when you’re in the crapper, although the connection between this and beanballs wasnt clear.
