In Other News
Deano Thilgen is working on a project for the Vintage Base Ball Association (VBBA), Life in 1860, which is intended to help put participants of 1860 vintage ball in a mindset for the time. A draft of the paper is at http://members.aol.com/deanrt/life1860.html, and Deano invites feedback from members.

The chapter’s board of directors has agreed to return to a schedule for its board meetings to have them take place on the first or second Sunday of the even-numbered months, rather than odd-numbered months, as had been the case the last few years. The next board meeting will be on Sunday, February 11.

New Members
The chapter welcomes two new members, Rob Malec and Dick Unruh. Here is some information about them.

Rob Malec is from St. Paul but has lived in other parts of the country while working for six years as a radio announcer in minor league baseball at the AA and A levels. He is now an account executive for the Minnesota Twins, selling group and season tickets as well as suites. Rob and his wife, Kate, live in Woodbury.

Dick Unruh, a SABR member since 1995, was born in Glendale, California, and now lives in Yankton, South Dakota. He is a school business manager in the Yankton School District and has a wife, Dawne; children, David, Cathy, Sylvia, and Rick; son-in-law, Brian; daughter-in-law, Marnie; and granddaughter, Lilyanna. As a South Dakota farmboy in 1955, Dick became a fan of the Kansas City Athletics. The first games he attended were in May of 1963 when he saw his A’s play a weekend series against the Twins at Met Stadium. In the Saturday game, Dick watched A’s lefthander Ted Bowsfield carry a no-hitter into the ninth inning, only to have Vic Power break it up when he grounded a single up the middle. “Not only was it something to see the near no-hitter,” Dick recalls, “but it was something else to hear Bowsfield when he gave up the first hit. A college roommate and I were sitting just behind third base, and we could hear very clearly every obscenity Bowsfield uttered as he became completely unglued.” Even though the A’s are no longer in Kansas City, Dick still roots for them and for the American League. Dick also plays various forms of fantasy baseball—Rotisserie for 10 seasons and Scoresheet for the last three—and adds that he had Eric Milton on three teams this past year.
