SABR News

SABR Day in America is Saturday, January 30, and the Halsey Hall Chapter will hold its annual Hot Stove League gathering that night. SABR Day in America is an “initiative to a way of visibly demonstrating the great sense of community and camaraderie that exists in SABR,” according to SABR publicity & member services manager Susan Petrone. “What is important is bringing together as many SABR members as possible on the same date. Our membership is scattered throughout the world, but baseball brings us together.” The Halsey Hall Chapter event will be at 7 p.m. at the home of Kevin Hennessy, 608 Grand Avenue in St. Paul. This is an informal gathering to discuss baseball among friends, and a DVD of the Twins 1961 season will be shown. Food and drinks will be available, and donations will be appreciated.

Paper of Record is back. Access to The Sporting News archives through Paper of Record is on the SABR web site in the Members Only section. Initially the site had a download quota of 250 pages a day, which applied to all SABR usage, not just individual members, but SABR has worked out the problem with Paper of Record, and the site is now fully functional.

The Yoseloff-SABR Baseball Research Grant Program is available again. Over the past five years, the program has awarded nearly $44,000 to 29 members for a total of 32 grant projects that have been published in the Baseball Research Journal and The National Pastime, among other places. The application form is on the SABR web site under “Awards.” The deadline to apply is May 14, 2010.

Other upcoming events:
The next Hot Stove Saturday Morning, an informal breakfast gathering for the purpose of talking baseball, will be at 9:00 on January 9 at Bakers Square in Richfield (66th Street to the east of Xerxes Avenue).

The Halsey Hall chapter book club’s next selection is Lawrence S. Ritter’s The Glory of Their Times. The book club will meet on Saturday, February 6 at 9:30 a.m. at the Barnes and Noble cafe in Har Mar Mall in Roseville. Har Mar Mall is located on Snelling Avenue about a mile and a half north of the state fairgrounds. For more information, contact Tom Dolen at 651-483-8617 or Art Mugalian at 612-721-2825.

The 2010 Spring Chapter Meeting has been set for Saturday, May 22. The Twins play the Milwaukee Brewers at Target Field that night.

Target Field

SABR 40 will be held from Thursday, August 5 to Sunday, August 8 in Atlanta. The convention will be at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel (165 Courtland Street NE, 404-659-6500), which has a special convention rate of $129 per night for guest rooms. The Atlanta Braves will be playing the San Francisco Giants during the convention.

Other chapter news:
John Bonnes and his fellow TwinsCentric bloggers will be writing and editing the 2010 Minnesota Twins Annual for Maple Street Press. The 128-page magazine will be released at the beginning of March, and 20,000 to 25,000 copies will be distributed by Time-Warner Retail wherever magazines are sold in the Minnesota area.

Cary Smith has been appointed chair of the Halsey Hall Chapter Membership Committee.

The chapter is considering starting a Facebook page as a way of promoting itself and SABR as well as chapter events.

In preparation for the possibility of the SABR convention coming to the Twin Cities, the Halsey Hall Chapter Research Committee has begun planning a convention publication that will carry articles related to baseball in the Upper Midwest. Anyone interested in writing for the convention publication may submit a proposal, including a description of the subject, to Dan Levitt, 612-377-5154.

During the business meeting at the spring chapter meeting, three members will be elected to the chapter’s board of directors. Anyone interested in running for a two-year term may contact Nominating Committee Chair Art Mugalian at 612-721-2825, amugalian@comcast.net.

The chapter will have a table at Twinsfest, which will be held January 29-31. Anyone interested in staffing the table during the event may contact Rich at 651-739-6986 or 651-259-3351 or via e-mail at rich.arpi@comcast.net.

A friend of chapter member Mendal Mearkle, George Savanick, was born and raised in Crucible, Pennsylvania, a small coal mining town in western Pennsylvania. His dad was a coal miner and baseball player on teams sponsored by various coal companies. He played against barnstorming major leaguers and teams, such as House of David. George’s dad caught a fly ball hit by Honus Wagner and said that Josh Gibson of the Homestead Grays was the best player he played against.

George is retired from the U. S. Bureau of Mines, for whom he did research on mining methods, and still occasionally consults with mining companies. He is a lifelong fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates, saw his first major league game at Forbes Field, and was present at the first game managed by Danny Murtaugh in Pittsburgh.

Born in 1938, George shares his January 10 birthday with fellow chapter member John McNeil as well as Willie McCovey, John “Jack” O’Neill, Chick Stahl, Harry Wright, Kelvin Torve, Adam Kennedy, Del Pratt, Ervin Santana, Richard Dotson, Chuck Dobson, Jim O’Toole, Bobby Rahal, Jim Croce, Sal Mineo, and Linda Lovelace.

Also new to the Halsey Hall Chapter: David Temple.
