Other Upcoming Events

The bi-monthly breakfast get-together will be January 8 at 9:00 a.m. at Bakers Square on 66th Street, just east of Xerxes Avenue, in Richfield.

Hot Stove League Meeting—January 22
The annual Hot Stove League meeting will be held Saturday, January 22, at 7 p.m. at Kevin Hennessy’s home, 608 Grand Avenue in St. Paul. Donations will be taken to cover the cost of snacks.

Twins Fest
The Halsey Hall Chapter will have a table at Twins Fest, January 28-30 at the Metrodome. Contact Rich Arpi (651-739-6986, rwaces@cs.com) if you are interesting in helping staff the table.

Book Club
The chapter’s book club will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 12 at Barnes & Nobel in the Galleria in Edina. The reading for the next meeting will be Brushbacks and Knockdowns: The Greatest Baseball Debates of Two Centuries by Allen Barra.

At the suggestion of Tom Dolen, the club has decided to strive for more structure in its meetings. Participants are encouraged to submit at least one question/discussion point that is related to the book to club chair Tom Swift (507-645-2280, tomswift@nickelcurves.com). “These questions/discussion points can be about anything related to the book,” says Tom, who reminds members that the club is open to anyone. “While we certainly may engage in literary criticism, it was agreed our discussions will most often stem from ideas/characters/insights presented in the book. As always, book selection suggestions and questions are welcome.”

The book club has a page on the chapter web site at http://halseyhall.org/bookclub.html.

Newsletter Issues
For the next six months, at least, the newsletter will continue to be printed in this two-page format and mailed to those who have paid a subscription fee. It will also be available on the chapter web site (http://halseyhall.org). Beginning in July, the newsletter may be produced only in the format for the web, although it could still be mailed to those who continue to pay the subscription fee. Brian Mohr has agreed to be in charge of distributing the newsletter starting in July.

Even if the newsletter will continue to be available by mail, members without internet access at home or work are encouraged to explore other ways to access the chapter web site as well as the site for the Society for American Baseball Research (http://sabr.org). Beyond the newsletter, these sites offer many valuable features and services to members.

Libraries have computers with internet access for patrons, and many offer free courses on how to surf the web. Here are some numbers for libraries in the Twin Cities area that have these courses:

    Minneapolis libraries: 612-630-6023
    St. Paul libraries: 651-266-7000
    Ramsey County libraries: 651-486-2200
    Hennepin County libraries: 952-847-5669

The Southdale Library holds an internet lab on the first Tuesday of every month from 10:30 to 12:30 that, among other things, allows participants to sign up for a free e-mail account.

We have done a workshop on all the features and functions available on the SABR and Halsey Hall Chapter sites, and we can do this again at a chapter meeting if there is interest.
