Recap of Fall Chapter Meeting
Chapter Events Chair Howard Luloff once again emceed the festivities, which began following the opening session with research presentations from Dave Jensen on Baseball Cards; Tom Swifty Swift, presenting research he has done for his forecoming book on Charles Albert Chief Bender, focusing on the 1902 season; Bob Tholkes, telling about his research on the pitcher who developed the forkball, Bullet Joe Bush; and Lee Temanson, filling in for the absent Dain TePoel (who became a father a few days before the meeting) giving a short presentation about a World War II newsletter from the U.S.S. Mount McKinley about a wire service report on drafted major leaguers. Following the Chapter Business Meeting and lunch, the afternoon session commenced with Armand Peterson presided over a panel of former Minnesota amateur baseball players that featured former Ohio State athlete Bob Montebello, Ken Staples, who played for and managed town teams in Fairmont, Mankato, and West St. Paul and also served as a minor league manager, and former New Ulm Journal reporter and KNUJ radio broadcaster Herb Schaper. Each of the panelists looked back at amateur baseball in Minnesota back in the 1940s and 1950s. The meeting portion concluded with a Jeopardy-style trivia quiz with the categories Jackie Robinson, 1987 World Champion Twins, It Happened This Season, Cardinals in Cooperstown, Herbs Without Peaches, and Twins Rhyme Time. The Final Question category was Metrodome Firsts, with the clue The first Twins pitcher to win a regular season game in the Metrodome. Both teams, captained by Dan Levitt and Cary Smith were incorrect with the correct question, Who was Roger Erickson? No, Charlie Boone was not his batterymate. Following the Quicksteps meeting to discuss the proposal splitting the teams into a SABR Nine and an Open Nine, the scene shifted to the residence of Stew Thornley and Brenda Himrich for food, fellowship and or course baseball. After viewing a portion of a DVD of the penultimate game of the 1967 season between the Twins and Red Sox, it was time for Game Six of the American League Championship Series between the Indians and Red Sox, with the Red Sox routing the Tribe.
