    Registration for the meeting is at 8:30 with research presentations beginning at 9:00. A business meeting will be held during lunch with a featured guest to follow. The cost for the meeting and lunch is $10. The meeting only is $5. Those wanting lunch must RSVP to Howard Luloff, 952-922-5036.

    Members are invited to submit a proposal to make a research (oral or poster) presentation at the meeting. Proposals must be sent to Research Committee co-chairs Brenda Himrich or Sarah Johnson and include a title and brief outline of what the presentation will consist of with emphasis on the research that will be included. Standard oral presentations are 20 minutes (with an additional eight minutes for questions) although the duration may be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the presenter and of the schedule. The Research Committee (which also consists of Dan Levitt, Jim Cox, Doug Skipper, Stew Thornley, Rich Arpi, Dave Lande, Anders Koskinen, and Bob Tholkes) will finalize the schedule of research presentations by October 20, two weeks before the meeting, so proposals must be submitted by then. Proposals for poster presentations may also be submitted to the co-chairs.

    Two presentations have been approved so far:

    • Showdown: Babe Ruth’s Rebellious Barnstorming Tour of 1921 by Tom Flynn

    A Poem by Aaron Sinner
    Aaron Sinner had this poem published in Spitball and consented to its republishing here:

    Aints

    One night every year, the Saint Paul Saints
    are sponsored by the local atheists’ club, and drop the “S”
    becoming the Aints.

    It’s a fitting moniker—
    they ain’t starry-eyed youths, freshly baptized into the sport;
    they ain’t blazing prospects, disciples of the game;
    they ain’t radiant major leaguers, Herculean and half-divine.

    They’re independent
    —unaffiliated—
    “the nones.”
    Caught on the River Styx
    belonging to neither shore.

    The Aints know they’ll never be canonized among the legends of baseball,
    yet they rack up hits and chase down flies
    because the promise of that sacred diamond isn’t a taste of the divine,
    but a taste of the human—
    beautiful because it ain’t sticking around.

    Special Offer for Autographed Felipe Alou Book
    The South Florida SABR Chapter recently hosted Peter Kerasotis, author of Alou: My Baseball Journey. The chapter has additional copies signed by Felipe Alou and is making them available for $20, which includes postage. Anyone interested in a copy make contact Sam Zygner.

    Felipe Alou card

    On the subject of Felipe Alou, he was once picked by a chapter member for a prize if Alou hit the first homer in a Yankees-Twins game at Met Stadium. This was part of a WCCO Radio pre-game show, Fan in the Stands, hosted by Randy Merriman, who interviewed fans and had them pick a card from his “batter’s box.” The fan did not score with Alou.
