Spring Chapter Meeting Set for April 25

The Spring Chapter Meeting will Saturday, April 25 at the Faith Mennonite Church, 2720 E. 22nd Street in south Minneapolis. Registration is at 8:30 with research presentations beginning at 9:00. The featured guest be on at 1:00. A business meeting will be held during lunch. The cost for the meeting and lunch is $10. The meeting only is $5. Those wanting lunch must RSVP to Howard Luloff, 952-922-5036. Howard has succeeded Scott Cummings, who left the Twin Cities to go to school in Duluth, as the chapter’s Events Committee Chair.

Members are invited to submit a proposal to make a research presentation at the meeting (with the understanding they might not know if they’re available until the meeting date is set. Proposals must be sent to Research Committee co-chairs Brenda Himrich or Sarah Johnson and include a title and brief outline of what the presentation will consist of with emphasis on the research that will be included. Standard presentations are 20 minutes (with an additional eight minutes for questions) although the duration may be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the presenter and of the schedule. The Research Committee (which also consists of Dan Levitt, Stew Thornley, Rich Arpi, and Bob Tholkes) will finalize the schedule of research presentations two weeks before the meeting, so proposals must be submitted by then.

Elections for the board of directors will be held during the business meeting. A special election will be held to fill the remainder of the term of Scott Cummings, who resigned when he moved to Duluth. The regular election will then be held, and four members will be elected to the board of directors to succeed outgoing directors Doug Skipper, Gary DeSmith, and Leanne Rohrbach as well as the person elected to fill out Scott’s term, which expires on June 30. Anyone interested in running for a two-year term may contact Nominating Committee Chair Stew Thornley, 651-415-0791.

Other upcoming activities:
The Halsey Hall Chapter Book Club will meet Saturday, February 7 at 9:30 a.m. at Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall in Roseville to discuss No Cheering in the Press Box by Jerome Holtzman. In addition, the group will discuss the telecast of Randy Johnson’s perfect game from May 18, 2004. The complete game is available for purchase from iTunes or for viewing on YouTube: 5/18/04: Randy Johnson’s Perfect Game.

The next Fred Souba Hot Stove Saturday Morning, an informal breakfast gathering for the purpose of talking baseball, will be at 9:00 on March 7 at Bakers Square in Richfield (66th Street to the east of Xerxes Avenue).

Twinsfest

Halsey Hall SABR table at Twinsfest

The Halsey Hall Chapter had a table at Twinsfest again this year and set up shop in the Metropolitan Room at Target Field, a warmer and nicer perch than the spot in the service level, where we were last year. In the photo above, Howard Luloff and Jerry Janzen are shown staffing the booth. Others who volunteered and took a shift were Brenda Himrich, George Rekela, Steve Ginader, Gene Gomes, S. Thornley, Rich Arpi, Joe O’Connell, and Doug Skipper. Doug organized the event for the second year in a row after taking over the Twinsfest duties from Rich Arpi, who had handled our participation for many years.

The volunteers talked to many people about SABR and distributed membership applications as well as displaying our Spread of Baseball in Minnesota project, which was started by Rich Arpi and now includes contributions from a number of members.

Two webpages have information on the spread of baseball, Pre-pro Baseball and Pre-pro Clubs and Games in Minnesota.

For more information on getting involved with the project, contact Research Committee co-chairs Brenda Himrich and Sarah Johnson. The Research Committee will be meeting Monday, February 23 at 7 p.m. the Hennepin County Southdale Library, 7001 York Avenue South, Edina 55435. For more information, contact Brenda or Sarah.

Mark Richard is from the Plymouth/Wayzata area and is a student at the University of Minnesota, where he studies math, statistics, and computer science.

Baseball has been a huge part of his life, and he started playing the game when he was 2. He played for Wayzata High School and an American Legion team in Hamel. A longtime Twins fan, Mark has attended many games at the Metrodome and Target Field and was present when Jim Thome hit the flag pole in the latter ballpark. A student of the game, he reads books about baseball and pores over stats.

Mark found out about SABR and the Halsey Hall Chapter while looking for additional ways to get involved in baseball and looks forward to being a member.

Mark shares his July 10 birthday with Marty Cordova, Lee Stevens, Hal McRae, Gene Alley, Graham McNamee, Johnny Niggeling, Jimmy McAleer, Bobby Lowe, Andre Dawson, David Brinkley, Arlo Guthrie, Sofia Vergara, Arthur Ashe, Don Herbert (Mr. Wizard), Fred Gwynne, Roger Awsumb (Casey Jones), and Ima Hogg.

Member News

Dan Levitt and Mark Armour have another book, In Pursuit of Pennants: Baseball Operations from Deadball to Moneyball, coming out this spring. In advance of the book’s release, Dan and Mark developed a blog, In Pursuit of Pennants, and count down the best 25 general managers of all-time. They had a general manager every weekday and will be getting to the top 10 in the first two weeks of February. Read about the first 15 they have selected and try to guess who the final 10 will be (Branch Rickey, Pat Gillick, Ed Barrow, Frank Wren, Dave Dombrowski, Neil Huntington, Jed Hoyer, Jon Daniels, Andrew Friedman, Bill Smith?).

Lloyd Kepple completed another Twins fantasy camp and played on the championship Warriors team. In 2014 Lloyd played with his son Ben and were the battery (Lloyd behind the plate) in a game for a team coached by Frank Viola and Greg Gagne. This year, Lloyd played the infield and left the catching to an old guy.
