Emma Charlesworth-Seiler: On the Mound and Behind the Plate

Emma Charlesworth-Seiler
Emma Charlesworth-Seiler pitched for and played on a club team in the Sydney suburbs and a tournament team representing Australia from September through mid-December. The tournament team played in the Taiwan International Women’s Baseball Tournament and against the Singapore 18-and-under national team. In 2017, Emma will be attending umpire school in Florida with hopes of getting a job in professional baseball.

Fred Souba Hot Stove Saturday Morning
The next Fred Souba Hot Stove Saturday Morning, an informal breakfast gathering for the purpose of talking baseball, will be at 9:00 on Saturday, January 7 at Curran’s, 4201 Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis.

Twinsfest
The Halsey Hall Chapter will again have a table at Twinsfest at Target Field from Friday, January 27 to Sunday, January 29. If you are interested in volunteering for a shift at the table, contact Doug Skipper, 612-876-1408.

Research Committee
The Research Committee will meet Monday, January 23 at 7 p.m. at the Hennepin County Southdale Library, 7001 York Avenue South, Edina 55435. The committee will also meet at the same time and place Monday, February 27. For more information, contact Brenda Himrich or Sarah Johnson.

Book Club
The Halsey Hall Chapter Book Club had a hefty turnout December 3 to meet with Jon Kerr, author of Calvin: Baseball’s Last Dinosaur. Besides Jon, those in attendance were Fred Buckland, Art Mugalian, Rich Arpi, Damian Schaab, Dave Jensen, Brent Heutmaker, Dan Levitt, Stew Thornley, Steve Bratkovich, Brenda Himrich, Jim Cox.

The book club will next meet Saturday, February 11 at 9:30 a.m. at the usual spot, Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall in Roseville. The book selection is Big Data Baseball: Math, Miracles, and the End of a 20-Year Losing Streak by Travis Sawchik. The group will also discuss the telecast of the seventh game of the 1982 World Series. The game is available for viewing on YouTube: 1982 World Series, Game 7: Brewers @ Cardinals

Dairy Queen Classic Baseball Tournament
With an oversized covered stadium again available in Minneapolis, the DQ Classic is back. Howard Luloff is organizing a chapter outing to see the Minnesota Gophers play the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at U. S. Bank Stadium on Saturday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. If interested, contact Howard Luloff, 952-922-5036.

Spring Chapter Meeting
The Spring Chapter meeting will be either Saturday, April 29 or Saturday, May 13 at Faith Mennonite Church in south Minneapolis. Stay tuned for more information.

More Stuff
Tom Flynn will try to organize a gathering to watch the Caribbean Series and/or the World Baseball Classic. Watch for more details and an announcement on the chapter’s Facebook page.

The chapter will organize trips to a townball game and a Northwoods League game this season. The schedules aren’t out yet, but details will be posted in the newsletter and on our Facebook page when they are known. The Northwoods League trip may be to see a Willmar Stingers game.

Minneanalytics Sports Analytics Conference in Minneapolis January 10
Dan Levitt, SABR president Vince Gennaro, and Minnesota Twins chief of baseball operations Derek Falvey will be among the speakers at the Minneanalytics Sports Analytics Conference at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis on Tuesday, January 10.

The event, which includes lunch and beer, is free with the understanding that your email address may be used once by the event sponsors (and you will have a chance to opt-out of this when you get to the conference).

The event organizers say the conference is filling up fast, so move quickly to reserve a spot (many Halsey Hall Chapter members have already registered): SportCon: Sport Analytics Conference by MinneAnalytics
