    New Officers Elected
The incoming board of directors for the Halsey Hall Chapter has elected Rich Arpi as president, Bob Tholkes vice president, Daniel Dorff secretary, and Jerry Janzen treasurer for a one-year officer term beginning July 1. The other directors on the board through June 30, 2024 are John Buckeye, David Karpinski, and Howard Luloff.

As the vice president, Bob appointed chairs/co-chairs for the standing committee, to wit (t’wit): Gene Gomes and Dave Lande, research; Stew Thornley and John Buckeye, membership; and Howard Luloff and Bob Komoroski, events.

The departing board members were saluted for their service, particularly Gene Gomes, who served two terms as president.

The history of officers and boards of directors, along with other interesting information and juicy tidbits, is on the chapter web site:

    Upcoming Events
    Possible road trips and outings
Howard Luloff has ideas of some fun trips to baseball games over the summer, but he needs to gauge the interest of members in attending. If you’ve got a hankerin’ for any or all of these, contact Howard—hfan77@centurylink.net, 952-922-5036—and let him know of your interest. Here are the trips Howard is looking at organizing.

      Townball
    • Friday, July 14, Northwest Orioles at Chaska, 7:30 p.m. or Green Isle at Arlington, 7:30 p.m.
    • Sunday, July 16, Shakopee at Chaska, 6:00 p.m.
    • Miesville Mudhens on July 14, 21, or 28 at 8:00 p.m.

      Northwoods League
    • Saturday, August 12 at Eau Claire or Wisconsin Rapids, 6:35 p.m. If there is enough interest in such a trip, Howard would look into team personnel speaking to the group before the game.

    Other events:
Join your fellow members and friends to eat, guzzle, talk baseball, watch the All-Star Game, and check out the new cans at Manning’s, 22nd and Como in southeast Minneapolis, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11.

The Fred Souba Hot Stove Saturday Morning, an informal breakfast gathering for the purpose of talking baseball, will be at Manning’s at 22nd and Como in southeast Minneapolis on Saturday, July 15 at 9:00 a.m. We can get tables reserved if we have some idea of how many are coming. Please RSVP to me, stew@stewthornley.net, if you plan to attend. This is an informal RSVP, so feel free to show up even if you haven’t RSVP’d and/or don’t sweat it if you RSVP and can’t make it (although an un-RSVP, if possible, would be appreciated).

The next Book Club meeting will be Saturday, August 5 at Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall at 9:30 a.m. The book selection is How Baseball Happened: Outrageous Lies Exposed! The True Story Revealed by Thomas W. Gilbert. Brent Heutmaker has organized a list of all the book selections since the book club started in August 2002: Halsey Hall Book Club Selections

The next Research Committee meeting, via Zoom, will be Monday, July 17. Research Committee members are co-chairs Dave Lande or Gene Gomes as well as Brenda Himrich, Sarah Johnson, Dan Levitt, Doug Skipper, Stew Thornley, Rich Arpi, Anders Koskinen, Hans Van Slooten, Mike Haupert, Bob Tholkes, Daniel Dorff, Darryl Sannes, Tom Swift, David Karpinski, Glenn Renick, John Buckeye, Terry Bohn, Art Mugalian and Bob Komoroski. Let Dave or Gene know if you would like to attend and/or join the committee.

The second anal. NINE Online Virtual Baseball Conference will be held October 12-13, and a call for papers is open until July 16. The conference will feature 15-minute presenations, and abstracts (no more than 300 words) may be sent to Willie Steele and David Pegram. Registration for the conference is $40, $20 for graduate students.

The Fall Halsey Hall Chapter meeting will be Saturday, November 18 at Faith Mennonite Church. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the program beginning 15 minutes later.

The cost for the meeting and lunch is $10. The meeting only is $5. Those wanting lunch are asked to RSVP to Howard Luloff, 952-922-5036. People can pay by cash (with correct change appreciated) or check at the door.

There will be a featured speaker in the afternoon, and the morning will consist of research presentations by chapter members. Howard will have his Almost New and Improved Jeopardy trivia quiz after the featured speaker along with door prizes.

Members are invited to submit a proposal to make a research presentation at the meeting. Proposals may be sent to Research Committee co-chairs Dave Lande or Gene Gomes and include a title and brief outline of what the presentation will consist of with emphasis on the research that will be included. Standard oral presentations are 20 minutes (with an additional eight minutes for questions) although the duration may be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the presenter and of the schedule.

One presentation slot is always reserved for a first-time presenter until four weeks before the chapter meeting (October 21). If a slot remains after that, any member can submit a proposal until November 4, two weeks before the meeting, when the Research Committee will wrap up the schedule of presentations.

    Billy Williams Honored

SABR crew promoting the Halsey Hall Chapter at the June 10 Saints game

Brenda Himrich, Dave Lande, Jerry Janzen, Daniel Dorff, and Rich Arpi hold up their Snuffy’s malts in front of the Halsey Hall banner about Hall of Famers who played in Minnesota at the June 10 St. Paul Saints game versus Iowa. The group talked to more than 50 people and handed out information on the chapter and its activites. The promotional table was arranged by Frank White as part of an event to honor Billy Williams, a night also arranged by Frank. As part of the festivities, the Saints wore uniforms of the St. Paul Gophers. (Below, Kenta Maeda pitches as part of a rehab start with the Saints, surrounded by teammates in their period uniforms. Frank has been a leading historian on Black baseball in the state and has promoted much of it through the Saints. He was recognized for his role in a June 10, 2023 Star Tribune article by James Walsh:

John Buckeye’s Family Friendly KinFolk Quiz
The June Research Committee meeting included a quiz submitted by John Buckeye.

    1. The shared last three letters of the last name of these two Hall of Fame fireballers who each won their only World Series when their team walked it off in a Game 7 against a New York team, giving him the win in relief. They also share the first word in their respective nicknames. Okay, they share their whole last names, too.
    2. This team, the only one of the major North America sports in their market, has only ever won a single World Series game, despite making two in their history. They’ve recently gone back to their original colors, so maybe they can improve that history. (Better answer: What the kids are calling them these days)
    3. This HoF Negro Leagues legend purportedly was so fast he could “Turn the hotel light off and be in bed before it went off,” according to a teammate and fellow legend. He was born James Thomas, but would go by a different name, and played mostly for the St. Louis Stars and the Pittsburgh Crawfords.
    4. The nickname of this Hall of Fame Dominican DH who shares the record for most postseason walk-off homers with a current Twin who just got his “first ever.”
    5. The theme song of the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates who came back from a three-to-one World Series deficit against the Orioles, to win their second against them that decade (both in seven). Hey, Blyleven was on this team!
    6. Nicknamed Big Poison and Little Poison, they played for the above franchise much earlier in the 20th Century. Neither won a World Series, but they were going up against the Murderer’s Row Yankees for the one they each made.
    7. Once a promising closer for the Mets, has since fallen on harder times, jumping around teams for the last three seasons. He’s currently pitching in Green and Gold.
    8. These two became the first father and son to hit homers back-to-back for their team in the 1990 season. The son would later play for his father’s original team as well.
    9. When the franchise moved, the team became the first major league baseball team to be named after somewhere other than a city. Their hats also became the first to have letters that stand for neither the team nickname nor the place they represent.
    10. Name the sibling combination with the most home runs in Major League history. You’ve definitely heard of one of them!
