Steve Ginader Elected President of Halsey Hall Chapter

At the Halsey Hall Chapter Meeting in April, Tom Flynn was elected to fill out the remainder of Scott Cummings’s unexpired term as well as a full term beginning July 1. Frank Kadwell, Doug Skipper, and Lloyd Kepple were also elected to two-year terms. They join Jerry Janzen, Steve Ginader, and Gene Gomes on the board and succeed outgoing directors Doug Skipper and Gary DeSmith.

In June, Steve Ginader was elected president, Tom Flynn vice president, Frank Kadwell secretary, and Jerry Janzen treasurer. Tom then reappointed the chairs of all standing committees: Howard Luloff for the Events Committee, Sarah Johnson and Brenda Himrich for the Research Committee, and Stew Thornley for the Membership Committee.

The group discussed Saturday, October 24 as a possible date for the Fall Chapter Meeting, although this is tentative.

The Halsey Hall Chapter appreciates the service of the outgoing directors and especially Doug Skipper, who served as president during the past year.

Sean Aronson

Sean Aronson Tweets, Talks, and Titillates before Full House at Spring Chapter Meeting
Sean Aronson, radio announcer and public-relations director for the St. Paul Saints, was the featured speaker at the Halsey Hall Chapter spring meeting on April 25. In the photo above, Sean displays the Tweeting Wiener shorts the Saints gave away after Rep. Anthony Weiner tweeted a photo of his tighty whities. On the table are other giveaways—a bobblehead of an amorous older woman for Cougar Night and a Metrodome whoopee cushion after the roof of the Metrodome deflated.

Sean covered his background, growing up in southern California, graduating from high school in Colorado, and attending college at the University of Colorado. He was an intern for the minor-league team in Colorado Springs before going onto then broadcasting/media-relation jobs in Allentown, Pennsylvania; Fort Myers, Florida; and, since 2007, the St. Paul Saints. Sean also talked about the new Saints ballpark, which includes the Treasure Island Terrace, referred to internally as the TIT.

The meeting drew more than 30 members and guests: Aaron Sinner, Jerry Janzen, S. Thornley, Brenda Himrich, Howard Luloff, Bob Komoroski, Armand Peterson, Hans van Slooten, Art Mugalian, Rich Arpi, Frank White, Berry Bengtsson, Jeff Lenz, Joe O’Connell, Lee Temanson, Gene Gomes, Doug Ernst, Josh Ostergaard, Roger Godin, Dave Jensen, Jim McKernon, Brent Heutmaker, Norman Heutmaker, Emma Charlesworth-Seiler, Doug Skipper, Dan Levitt, Aaron Stilly, Frank Kadwell, Lloyd Kepple, George Rekela, Joe Niese, Brian Madigan, and Jim McNearney.

The meeting had three research presentations, Dan Levitt on Pat Gillick, Joe Niese on Burleigh Grimes and Andy Pafko, and Frank White on black baseball in the area. Armand Peterson brought a poster on black baseball among town teams and briefly presented on it.

A silent auction raised $242 for the chapter.

Upcoming activities:
The SABR convention in Chicago in late June will include presentations from Halsey Hall Chapter members:

  • Juan Marichal and John Roseboro: The Fight of Their Lives by John Rosengren
  • Why Can’t a Woman Be More Like a Man? Gender and Professional Athletes by Michael Haupert and Lisa Giddings
  • Pat Gillick and His “Many Rivers”: One General Manager’s Approach to Gaining an Edge by Dan Levitt

The next Fred Souba Hot Stove Saturday Morning, an informal breakfast gathering for the purpose of talking baseball, will be at 9:00 on July 11 at Bakers Square in Richfield (66th Street to the east of Xerxes Avenue).

The Halsey Hall Chapter Book Club will meet Saturday, August 8 at 9:30 a.m. at Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall in Roseville to discuss The Game: Inside the Secret World of Major League Baseball’s Power Brokers by Jon Pessah.

Road Trips and Ballgames
The chapter will go to a Delano Athletics game at Delano Municipal Stadium at Central Park on Friday, July 17. The Athletics play Mound that night at 7:30. Those attending can meet before and/or after for dinner and drinks at 6 p.m. at the Juke Box Restaurant, 203 Bridge Avenue East, Delano 55328, 763-972-6161.

Charles Clark is interested in hosting a group outing to see the Burleigh Grimes Museum in Clear Lake, Wisconsin, possibly on a Saturday in November. Charles hosted the chapter in June 1985 for a trip to meet Burleigh Grimes and later to see the Grimes Museum and grave. If you might be interested in going, please contact Stew Thornley.

Burleigh Grimes with SABR members in June 1985
In June 1985 Charles Clark hosted the newly formed Halsey Hall Chapter in Clear Lake, Wisconsin, where the group had the chance to meet Burleigh Grimes. Grimes is in the front row (center). The chapter members in the photo include Bob Evans, Paul Rittenhouse, Dave Moore, Stew Thornley, Gary Clendennen (with his son, Andy), Jim Lea, Dave Anderson, and Jon Kerr.
