Spring Chapter Meeting Set for March 29

The Spring Chapter Meeting will Saturday, March 29 at the Faith Mennonite Church, 2720 E. 22nd Street in south Minneapolis. Registration is at 8:30 with research presentations beginning at 9:00. The featured guest be on at 1:00. A business meeting will be held during lunch. The cost for the meeting and lunch is $10. The meeting only is $5. Those wanting lunch must RSVP to Scott Cummings, 952-334-0075.

Members are invited to submit a proposal to make a research presentation at the meeting (with the understanding they might not know if they’re available until the meeting date is set. Proposals must be sent to Research Committee co-chairs Brenda Himrich or Sarah Johnson and include a title and brief outline of what the presentation will consist of with emphasis on the research that will be included. Standard presentations are 20 minutes (with an additional eight minutes for questions) although the duration may be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the presenter and of the schedule. The Research Committee (which also consists of Dan Levitt, Stew Thornley, Rich Arpi, and Bob Tholkes) will finalize the schedule of research presentations two weeks before the meeting, so proposals must be submitted by then.

During the business meeting, three members will be elected to the chapter’s board of directors to succeed outgoing directors Jerry Janzen, Dave Jensen, and Howard Luloff. Anyone interested in running for a two-year term may contact Nominating Committee Chair Art Mugalian, 612-721-2825.

Other upcoming activities:
The next Fred Souba Hot Stove Saturday Morning, an informal breakfast gathering for the purpose of talking baseball, will be at 9:00 on March 8 at Bakers Square in Richfield (66th Street to the east of York Avenue).

The Research Committee will meet Monday, March 17 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hennepin County Southdale Library, 7001 York Avenue South, Edina 55435. For more information, contact Brenda Himrich or Sarah Johnson. Another research workshop at the Southdale Library is planned for Monday, April 14 at a location to be determined.

The Halsey Hall Chapter Book Club will meet Saturday, April 5 at 9:30 a.m. at Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall in Roseville to discuss Seasons in Heck: With Billy Martin, Whitey Herzog and the Worst Baseball Team in History—The 1973-1975 Texas Rangers by Mike Shropshire. In addition, the group will discuss the telecast of Game Six of the 1977 World Series. Celebrating Black History Month through Baseball

As part of Black History Month in February, the city of Bloomington and Bloomington Human Rights Commission are hosting a baseball event on Thursday night, February 27, at the Bloomington Civic Plaza, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road, Bloomington 55431-3027.

Frank White will present his They Played for the Love of the Game, Adding to the Legacy of Minnesota Black Baseball exhibit. Other chapter members will be involved and presenting, Armand Peterson will bring a display on black baseball in Minnesota, and all members are welcome to attend and staff a table to promote the Halsey Hall Chapter. The event starts at 6:30 with the program beginning at 7:00.

New Members

Michael Forsythe is from Marissa, Illinois, where he played on a state runner-up team in high school. He also coached a high-school junior-varsity team when he was in college. He attended his first major-league game when he was four years old. Notable games he has been to include Ryne Sandberg’s last game, the final regular-season game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the game when Jason Kubel hit for the cycle (capping it with a game-winning grand slam), and the first game of the 2008 National League Division Series at Wrigley Field.

Michael learned of SABR from Bill James’s Historical Baseball Abstract and discovered the Halsey Hall Chapter through the SABR website.

Michael shares his June 5 birthday with Jack Chesbro, Ray Lankford, Mike Coolbaugh, Russ Ortiz, Bill Spiers, Paul Siebert, Duke Sims, Lou Brissie, Eddie Joost, Truck Hannah, Ron Livingston, Jeff Garlin, Bill Moyers, Mark Wahlberg, John Maynard Keynes, Pancho Villa, Kenny G, and Bob Probert.

Also new to SABR: David Hill

SABR Announces Book about 1965 Twins

SABR is producing a book consisting of biographies of players on the 1965 Twins as well as others connected with the team. The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2014. Gregory Wolf, the project editor, is looking for someone to write a biographical sketch of sportswriters Max Nichols and Dick Gordon. Some players may also be available. Anyone interested in learning more may contact Gregory Wolf.
