Marshall Kelner to be Featured Guest at Spring Chapter Meeting
Marshall Kelner—a lawyer who has worked with sports organizations and was a play-by-play announcer for the Minnesota Twins affiliate in Fort Myers, Florida—will be the featured guest at the Halsey Hall Chapter Spring Meeting Saturday, April 25 at the Plymouth branch of the Hennepin County Library system, 15700 36th Ave North, Plymouth 55446. Registration begins when the library opens at 9:00 a.m. with the program beginning soon after, so punctuality is encouraged. Instead of a set admission price, it will be a Pay as You Can with donations of all amounts accepted.

Members are invited to submit a proposal to make a research presentation at the meeting. Proposals may be sent to Research Committee co-chairs Dave Lande or Gene Gomes and include a title and brief outline of what the presentation will consist of with emphasis on the research that will be included. Standard oral presentations are 20 minutes (with an additional eight minutes for questions) although the duration may be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the presenter and of the schedule.

One presentation slot is always reserved for a first-time presenter until four weeks before the chapter meeting (March 28). If a slot remains after that, any member can submit a proposal until April 11, two weeks before the meeting, when the Research Committee will wrap up the schedule of presentations.

Three presentations have been approved so far:

The 1937 St. Paul Kohn’s: Minnesota’s First National Baseball Champions by Armand Peterson

The Sports Agent and Sports Management by Kris Hard

Elston Howard’s 1951 Semi-professional Baseball Season in Wisconsin by Paul Spyhalski

Howard Luloff will conduct his Jeopardy-style quiz before lunch, when the business meeting will be held.

    Elections
During the business meeting, an election will be held for president-elect and director in accordance with the revised by-laws. Any SABR member may run for director, which will be a three-year term. Candidates for president-elect must have served at least one year of the board of directors within the last five years. A nominating committee is being assembled, and anyone may indicate interest in running by contacting Ed Edmonds, edmonds.7@nd.edu. Candidates will be invited to submit a candidate statement, which will appear in the next issue of The Holy Cow! Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the meeting.

    Other Upcoming Events
Take your pick of Opening Day Watch Parties on March 26. TwinsDaily will host one at BlackStack Brewing, 755 Prior Avenue North, St. Paul 55104, and D&J Glove Repair will have a watch party at the Vincent L. Giantvalley American Legion Post 234, 1751 Minnehaha Avenue, Minneapolis 55406. The Twins versus Baltimore game starts at 2:05 p.m. Central Time with social time starting an hour before that.

A naming dedication of the atrium at Benjamin Mays School in honor of Toni Stone will be held Thursday, March 26 as part of a community dinner starting at 5:30. The school is on the site of where Stone lived at 551 Carroll Avenue. Benjamin Mays School is at 560 Rondo Avenue, St. Paul 55103. The entrance and parking are on the west side of the building. The dedication will fulfill the goal of Frank White in marking the location of Stone’s home.

The Minneapolis Association of Baseball Enthusiasts will gather starting around 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27 at Grumpy’s Northeast, 2200 4th Street NE, Minneapolis 55418. All baseball enthusiasts are invited to attend and enjoy Heggies pizza, a variety of beverages, discussion of dead-pool picks and baseball, cribbage (bring your own cards), and stimulating conviviality.

The now-annual SABR preview of teams in the American League Central Division will be on Zoom Sunday, March 29 at 4:30 p.m. Central time. Registration information.

The next Book Club meeting will be Saturday, April 11 at Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall at 9:30 a.m. The book selection is The Celebrant by Eric Rolfe Greenberg.

Brent Heutmaker has organized a list of all the book selections since the book club started in August 2002: Halsey Hall Book Club Selections.

The Fred Souba Hot Stove Saturday Morning, an informal breakfast gathering for the purpose of talking baseball, will be Saturday, May 9 at 9:00 a.m. at the Shortstop Bar and Grill, 1298 East Moore Lake Drive, Fridley 55432.

Gustavo II will take place Saturday night, May 30, at Mayo Field as the Rochester Honkers host the Minot Hot Tots in a Northwoods League game at 6:35 p.m. with a pre-game gathering at Brothers Bar & Grill (812 Broadway Avenue South, Rochester 55904) at 4:00 p.m. at which members will be able to meet and masticate with Honkers official scorer Kyle Traynor. Two years ago on a similar chapter outing, the game was rained out but not before a chapter member threw out a ceremonial first pitch, screwing 13-year-old Gustavo of a similar honor on his golden birthday (the downpour started right after the first pitch by the chapter member and before Gustavo was able to throw his). Gustavo may be at the game. If he is, he’s gonna be whizzed, so steer clear of him. For more information, contact Stew Thornley.

The 2026 SABR convention in Cleveland will be Wednesday, July 29 to Sunday, August 2 at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown. The Arizona Diamondbacks will be in town to play the Guardians during the convention.

John Buckeye’s Outta This World Quiz
For the March 16 Research Committee meeting, John Buckeye presented this quiz:

    1. The alliterative nickname of this current slugger, who is still a lock for the Hall of Fame even after a steep recent decline to his career. Was famously picked 25th in the draft and has signed a long-term extension with the only team he’s played for, despite never having won a playoff game with them.
    2. The alliterative (or, if shortened, one-word) nickname of this pitcher who formerly was a lock for the Hall, though now seems like he may never make it. Spent a decent amount of time pitching for a team from his home state that is an answer to another question in this quiz.
    3. This franchise is no longer known by the name they started with, instead changing it to one that more fits the sparkly new home they opened in 1965. After changing uniforms a lot, this franchise finally won their first World Series less than a decade ago, and have had greater success since then.
    4. This Southern League team recently changed their whole name (place and nickname) to represent the nickname of their city as well as capitalize on the latest nickname for raccoons.
    5. This event is held once a summer and has taken place in Minnesota three times. There used to be two per year, and it started in 1933.
    6. The nickname of this pitcher who wore number 37 but said he wished he could wear 337 so you could see his last name even if he was standing on his head. He pitched 14 years in the majors, mostly for the Red Sox, making one All-Star Game and reaching 200 innings four times. His autobiography is called The Wrong Stuff.
    7. Born Johnny Lee, he would go by this nickname that more fits our theme, pitching mostly for the Charlie O. Finley Athletics, with whom he won three World Series. He had a career high 16 wins in 1968 and retired with a record one game below .500.
    8. The new nickname of a Tigers Double A affiliate, which was given to them in a re-brand last year by Last Week Tonight with John Oliver when their team was picked in a contest. The new name pays homage to a local amateur diver who unearthed the fossilized bones of an ancient extinct species in the bottom of a local lake.
    9. Current veteran outfielder for the New York Mets, this player is a two-time All-Star and two-time gold glove winner, having started with the Pirates. While the first part of his first name earns this theme, he is currently only the second-best player in the league with his last name.
    10. Bonus Questions that fit this theme: 1) what someone who provides absolutely no offense in a batting lineup might be referred to, and 2) another name for a home run
